Research Partnerships

At the Amputee Coalition, we’re committed to supporting research that leads to real improvements in the lives of people with limb loss and limb difference. Our research partnerships help shape a better understanding of the community’s needs and inform public policy that drives meaningful change.

Current Research Partnerships

At this time, there are no active research partnerships to share. However, we continue to explore opportunities to collaborate on research that benefits the limb loss and limb difference community.

Past Research Partnerships

One example of our past collaborations is our work with Avalere Health, a healthcare consulting firm. Together, we analyzed insurance claims data to estimate how many people in the United States are currently living with limb loss and limb difference (LLLD).

Key Findings:

  • More than 5.6 million people in the U.S. are living with limb loss or limb difference.
  • Approximately 2.3 million people have limb loss, while another 3.4 million have limb difference.
  • These estimates are likely lower than the actual numbers, as they don’t account for individuals who are uninsured or covered by Veterans Affairs or TRICARE.
