Study Title:
Using 3D Motion Capture to Assess Compensatory Strategies in Daily Movement Task Capacity for Unilateral Transfemoral and Transtibial Amputees compared to Non-impacted Controls
Study Location:
800 W Campbell Rd., Richardson, TX 75080. Engineering and Computer Science Building West (ECSW) 2.470.
Research Objectives:
This study will determine how unilateral amputees move during everyday tasks such as walking, transitioning from a sitting position to standing, and obstacle crossing. Daily tasks require proper balance, appropriate weight loading, and coordinated trunk and lower-limb control. The goal of this study is to use a kinematic-kinetic approach to potentially identify movement behavior differences and compensatory strategies to execute successful movement. Eligibility Criteria:
Are adults aged 18 years or older with a unilateral amputation or knee-disarticulation.
Have had been accustomed to prosthetic for at least 6 months.
Can ambulate and regularly use their prosthetic (minimum daily use, e.g., several hours per day).
Able to walk without assistive device (e.g., cane, clutch) for extended periods of time.
Have no current medical for musculoskeletal, neurological, or cardiopulmonary disorder(s) unrelated to the amputations that affect gait and/or balance capabilities.
Have sufficient cognitive ability to understand study procedures and provide informed consent.
Compensation Details:
Participants may receive up to $60 for completing the study. Study is pro-rated at $20 an hour.
Enrollment Closes:
Oct 1, 2027
Time Commitment:
Possible participants will fill out a pre-assessment questionary to determine if a participant qualifies for the study, which should take up to 30 minutes.
If the participant is deemed eligible for the study, the participant will be asked and schedule to visit the lab for a one-time collection of up to 3 hours. Participation will include a consenting process, demographical questionnaire forms.
