The Amputee Coalition would like to thank our veterans and wish you a safe Veterans Day. We are grateful for the opportunity to honor and support you for your service, and we recognize all who have served.
To veterans who are living with limb loss: we see you; we hear you. Our goal is to support you and our entire veteran community with education, support, advocacy, and information about further limb loss prevention. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected each of us in different ways, and we want you to know we are here for you. No one should go through their limb loss journey alone.
We offer many supports for veterans, family and friends, and care partners, some of which include:
- Peer Visits with an experienced, trained Certified Peer Visitor who will offer encouragement and information from a place, and at a pace, that an individual living with limb loss can better relate to. The Amputee Coalition’s Peer Visitor Program is implemented throughout the VA system of care and you can also request an online (phone, email, video, or text) visit by using our secure online form, our peer support mobile app, or by calling 888-267-5669, extension 1.
- Well-being support and community resources including tools to help you self-evaluate your mental well-being, information on Centers for Independent Living, crisis center telephone hotlines, and home modification resources, as well as state and national resources.
- Our Partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help veterans find rehabilitation and prosthetic services. We work with Amputation Rehabilitation Coordinators at the VA to share informative and educational materials with veterans and their loved ones and support them in finding the expertise they require.
- We also offer our Community Connections website resource, where you can enter your ZIP code to find resources closest to you as well as other resources throughout the entire United States.
Not everyone has information about the type of limb loss they’re living with. Whether you lost a limb during your military service or after, if you, your care partner, or friends and family members have any questions about living with limb loss, please call the National Limb Loss Resource Center at 888-267-5669, and press 1. You will be able to speak with a specialist from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. ET who can assist you with your needs and help make any necessary referrals.
We are committed to ensuring veterans with limb loss are honored, supported and have access to the supports and resources they need to navigate their recovery and rehabilitation process.
