Rehabilitation can occur on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Inpatient rehabilitation refers to a level of care in which patients stay at a rehab hospital to address their medical needs and recovery goals. Patients have immediate access to their care team and participate in frequent, intensive therapy programs. Outpatient therapy is often recommended to patients who would benefit from rehab services but have no acute medical needs that require hospitalization. A benefit of outpatient rehab is that participants can live at home and only need to visit a rehab center for scheduled visits. Some individuals participate in outpatient therapy after being discharged from a hospital, while others are referred directly from home.
