Breaking News:
The Governor's amendments were formally agreed to by the Senate and the House on April 8, 2009, and SB 1116 will now become law on July 1, 2009! This makes Virginia the 13th state to sign prosthetic parity into law!
We would like to especially thank Charlie Coulter and Doug Call, Rick Stapleton, Harry Weintrob, Susan Bailey, Robert and Lisa Riiber, Lori Whelan, Dr. Fred Duckworth, Billy Aaron, David Lawrence, Charles Bradley, and Wayne Mechum for their hard work and dedication in getting this legislation passed for amputees throughout Virginia.
The House passed SB 1116 by a vote of 99 to 0 on February 24, 2009! Please call or email your delegate and thank them for their support today. Click here to determine who your Delegate is. Virginia is on its way to becoming the 12th state with a prosthetic parity bill signed into law! Thank you to everyone for their support, especially Senator Patsy Ticer and Delegate Lee Ware for their support and help in getting this bill passed by the Virginia legislature!
SB 1116 passed the Senate! The Senate voted 33-7 to pass SB 1116 as a mandated offer on February 3, 2009. After compromizing with differing interests, SB 1116 is now a mandated offer, which means that if a company covers prosthetic care, they must cover it on par. This will help to significantly close the gap and help amputees across Virginia to get the prosthetic care they need. Now the legislation will be sent to the House for concurrence.
Other Advocacy Issues: While parity is a big priority for the ACA’s advocacy team, we have recently been involved in a number of issues advocating on behalf of people with limb loss and limb difference. Is there a bill or issue in your state that we need to know about? Contact us at state@amputee-coalition.org.
The ACA is also working hard to pass federal parity legislation in order to extend protections for health plans regulated by Congress (about half of all policies). Get informed by visiting our federal parity page.
Help keep up the fight for parity and protect the health and rights of amputees throughout the country! Whether you can give $5, $50 or $500 we need your financial support!! Write a check to the “Amputee Coalition of America” and send it to: ACA, 300 East Hill Ave, Suite 205, Knoxville, TN, 37915 or make a donation online on our secure marketplace at: www.amputee-coalition.org/advocacy/donation.
