VA Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service

 

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) is the healthcare provider and case manager for assistive aids and prosthetic equipment needs of disabled veterans. Vets enrolled in the VA system whose care provider prescribes an aid or device are eligible for PSAS services.

 

PSAS services include:

·        Evaluating needs

·        Designing custom devices

·        Refitting and adjusting the item

·        Performing gait analysis

·        Recommending physical therapy intervention

·        Communicating with primary care providers to assist with ongoing medical care.

 

Products provided by PSAS include:

·        Artificial limbs (computerized legs, myoelectric arms, etc.)

·        Vision aids (talking watches/alarm clocks, magnifiers, CCTVs, etc.)

·        Communication devices (GPS systems, medical alert devices, environmental control units, etc.)

·        Computers for the blind and/or disabled

·        Durable medical equipment (DME)

·        Home respiratory therapy including home oxygen, CPAPs, BiPAPs, nebulizers

·        Hospital beds

·        Items for daily living (blood pressure monitors, TENS units, reachers, long-handled sponges, canes, crutches, walkers, etc.)

·        Orthotic devices (shoes, braces, inserts, compression stockings, etc.)

·        Patient lifts (wheelchair, seat, etc.)

·        Recreational/Rehabilitative equipment (swimming legs, handcycles, archery arms, etc.)

·        Surgical implants (pacemakers, ICDs, orthopedic hips and knees, ocular lenses, cochlear implants, etc.)

·        Wheelchairs (manual, powered, iBOTs, scooters, etc.)

·        Hearing aids and eyeglasses (specific criteria and exceptions apply; please see your local prosthetics chief for more information).

 

Programs

PSAS also offers a number of specialized programs to assist vets, including an automobile adaptive equipment program, the Home Improvement and Structural Alterations (HISA) program and a clothing allowance program.
