We need your help TODAY on an important Medicare issue. Background: Congress was being pushed to advance a 2008 Medicare law in order to avoid a Medicare cut of about 10% to all physicians. A payment fix was being worked on. There were also issues with a competitive bidding program for durable medical equipment (DME) that was scheduled to be launched in July. This would have cut rates for orthotics and prostheses... After strong lobbying by the ACA and our partners we were able to remove orthotic and prosthetic care from the chopping block, but there are some areas that are still being threatened including power wheelchairs. HR 6311 would delay the implementation of the Medicare competitive bidding program for 18 months in order to give the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services time to reevaluate the process. It would also spare power wheelchairs and oxygen equipment from deep cuts. Today, President Bush vetoed the Medicare bill (H.R. 6311). Although both the House and Senate have passed the bill by a veto-proof margin, the White House only needs three Senators to switch their vote in order for a veto override to fail. TAKE ACTION NOW! Your senator is one of the targets. Please, make a call now. You can contact your senator via the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121. SAMPLE PHONE SCRIPT: Thank you for your support of the Medicare package and HR 6311, which includes important provisions on the Medicare competitive bidding program. Please continue to support this legislation.
