Public Donation Information
There are several ways in which you can help Haiti now:
Give money: The most effective way people can assist relief efforts is by making cash contributions to humanitarian organizations (e.g., Healing Hands for Haiti, UNICEF or the Red Cross) that are conducting relief operations. Cash donations are encouraged because they:
- Allow aid professionals to procure the exact items needed (often in the affected region)
- Reduce the burden on scarce resources (such as transportation routes, staff time, and warehouse space)
- Can be transferred quickly and without transportation costs
- Support the economy of the disaster-stricken region
- Ensure culturally, dietary, and environmentally appropriate assistance.
Donate prosthetic/orthotic components, equipment or materials: If you have componentry, new or used prostheses, or fabrication materials or equipment, please donate them through the Prosthetic & Orthotic Component Clearinghouse.
Volunteer: Many concerned citizens are looking for opportunities to volunteer in Haiti, but these are currently limited to people with technical skills in health or engineering, or people with prior disaster experience. If you want to register your skills for a potential volunteer opportunity, you can visit the Center for International Disaster Information’s registration page.
