The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) is proud to announce Derrick Stowell as the new Youth Activities Program (YAP) Coordinator, where he is responsible for the coordination of ACA’s four-day annual residential youth camp for over 60 children with limb loss/differences, ACA’s youth activities e-Zine (YAZ), and various youth-related outreach initiatives and activities.
Stowell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maryville College with a double major in Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Sciences, and subsequently earned a Master of Science in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Stowell has six years of camp and recreational experience, including: serving as a counselor for a YMCA wilderness canoe camp; teaching environmental studies to elementary and middle school students from Knox County public schools through the Earth Flag program at Ijams Nature Center; and serving as a counselor for Mountain Challenge, the oldest outdoor team-building company in the East Tennessee region, where he provided high-quality, safe outdoor experiences for youth and college students, including working with students from the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
As a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee, Stowell also directed and helped plan Camp Koinonia, a week-long camp for children from the Knoxville area with multiple disabilities.
Stowell currently volunteers with Adventure Church, an interdenominational church that meets at William Blount High School in Maryville, Tennessee, and he continues to serve as a staff member with Mountain Challenge when time permits.
Stowell states, “I look forward to working with the Amputee Coalition of America to continue to develop and improve the youth program.”
